Public space #4: get a sound permit

Goal: Get a permit to amplify sound (if applicable).

After you've received your public space permit, you will need a apply for a separate sound permit if you are amplifying sound in any way. In New York City, sound permits are usually obtained at the precinct where the prospective event is expected to take place. Street Works can help connect folks for sound permits to the 115th Precinct in Jackson Heights, Queens.

Tips

  • If you're amplifying sound, note it on the public space permit application.

  • Contact the local precinct of your event as soon as you have the public space permit and let them know about your event. They should already have it on their calendar.

  • Apply for a sound permit at the precinct of the event no less than 5 days before the event. Call ahead, but walk in if you have trouble reaching a community liaison by phone.

  • You may have to fill out a Sound Device Application. There also might be a $45 fee, payable by certified check or money order. If approved, permits are normally ready for pickup 0-2 days before the event.

  • Have the permit on hand during the event.
