Design principles
Street Works adopts Make Justice Normal’s (MJN) values — justice, loving care, and solidarity. Our design principles set extra standards for operations and creative processes.
Principle #1: co-create
Just systems practice democracy, but we don't all understand what its core — shared power — is or means. Co-creation is an artistic method where the experience of shared power is lived, multi-sensory, joyful, & creative.
Principle #2: treat relationship as art
Loving, solidarity-guided systems center people — not products — and foster joy. Unfortunately, art is often prioritized over artists. So what if we are the art?
Principle #3: make for place & public space
Justice and injustices often manifest in place, through policies, urban planning, & more. Public space is an entry point to pushing back, and learning about collective ownership, stewardship, and design.
Principle #4: spark inclusive action
Arts can serve justice by inspiring people to act or change in ways that are right for them. How do we build the bridges and make the paths easy? What about community priorities that we know matter, like climate justice, wealth inequality, and health & healing?
