Can we own our food future?
All day, Western Queens Food Coop
Meet neighbors working to build a community-owned grocery co-op for Western Queens.
They're starting with a buying club and mobile delivery that will bring affordable, fresh food to multiple neighborhoods while building the membership and community support needed for a permanent grocery store. By purchasing together, members can access lower prices, support local and regional producers, and help shape a food system that serves the community instead of outside shareholders.
While Western Queens is home to many amazing food businesses, access to affordable, healthy food is still uneven. Some neighborhoods have no full-service grocery stores, while food costs are out of control. Food is also about climate. The way we grow, transport, package, and distribute food is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.
Community-owned food co-ops can strengthen local and regional food systems, reduce waste through collective purchasing, support more sustainable farming practices, and build resilience as climate change puts increasing pressure on our food supply.
Stop by to learn how a food co-op works and find out how you can become part of building a healthier, more resilient, and community-owned food future for Western Queens!
