Every Electric
We are a team of renters, ratepayers, and clean energy geeks living right here in the city. We face the same heat waves and pay the same bills you do.
That's why we started Every Electric: to build an electric everyday that elevates everyone. We believe everyone should have the tools to contribute to—and benefit from—a cleaner, more affordable electric future—one simple plug-in powerbank at a time.
What it is
Every Electric makes it easier for people to use a home battery and get paid for using it when the electric grid is stressed, which happens often in the hot summer months. The battery plugs into a regular wall outlet, stores electricity, and can be used to power many devices, including an air conditioner when it’s better to not use the grid.
Under the standard program, Every Electric provides the battery at no cost to the resident in exchange for a $50 refundable deposit. Eligible households with limited financial resources can participate through the Community Access program without paying the $50 deposit.
You simply plug your air conditioner into the battery and the battery into a regular wall outlet. During periods of high electricity demand, Every Electric automatically switches your air conditioner to use electricity stored in the battery instead of drawing as much electricity from the grid. This helps Con Edison reduce demand when the grid is under the most strain. Because you’re helping the grid during these high-demand periods, you’re paid through Con Edison’s Smart Usage Rewards program. You can earn up to $150 per air conditioner for doing this, with the payment made to you at the end of the season.
The battery can also provide backup power during an outage, allowing you to use it to keep essential devices such as Wi-Fi, office equipment, or a refrigerator running, depending on the battery's available power and the device you connect to it.
