How to register to vote

Most US states require that you register before voting. The process varies by state: for some, you should start registering far ahead. Aim to complete housekeeping at the beginning of the year so you aren't caught off guard.

  1. Visit vote.gov to get routed to your state. Voters in each state and territory must follow local laws. You’ll fill out a simple form with your name, address, and basic info. You can usually register online, by mail, or in person depending on where you live.

  2. Even if you think you're registered, check! Sometimes registration can be marked as inactive if you haven't voted consistently in elections.

  3. If you've moved, you will need to re-register in your state. Even if you've moved within a state, look into re-registering.

  4. After you register, check your registration status to make sure everything is correct.

Registering signs you up for elections (the main election in November) where candidates from multiple parties are on the ballot. But in most states, you can pick a political party (eg, democrats, republicans) when you register. This is important if you want to vote in certain “primary” elections, where parties choose their candidates before the main election.
